Very simply the "cold chain" is the system of transporting and storing vaccines, insulin and any other temperature sensitive products in the prescribed manner and controlling the temperature of product stored in a refrigerator between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius aiming for an average of 5 degrees.
In assuming this professional responsibility, Pharmacists and all Medical Practitioners have to decide to what lengths they are prepared to go financially to ensure that their customers/patients receive the vaccines in the condition that they have a right to expect, in other words fully potent. What to do: It is quite acceptable for the fridge to sometimes show a maximum over 8 degrees.
The important issue is whether it is going into ALARM mode. If it doesn’t alarm it means that the fridge may have been over the range for a short time – but under 15 mins.
Be aware that we can adjust the fridge to run colder at the top (without affecting the bottom temp), however it is getting the compressor to work harder than is necessary.
